A True Catfish Story

......Who would have expected that even a fish needed help.....

A Fish Story

A guy who lives at Lake Conroe (50 miles north of Houston) saw a ball bouncing around kind of strangely in the lake and went to investigate.

It turned out to be a flathead catfish who had obviously tried to swallow a basketball which became stuck in its mouth!

The fish was totally exhausted from trying to dive, but unable to because the ball would always bring him back up to the surface. The guy tried numerous times to get the ball out, but was unsuccessful. He finally had his wife cut the ball in order to deflate it and release the hungry cat fish.

You probably wouldn't have believed this,

If you hadn't seen the following pictures....

Be kinder than necessary. Everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Most annoying word of 2010

"Whatever" voted most irritating word in poll.

NEW YORK - Whatever you think about using grating words, at the end of the day it's actually better not to day whatever, if you know what I mean.

For the second consecutive year, "whatever" topped a Marist poll as the most annoying word or phrase in the English language.

Nearly 39% of 1020 Americans questioned in the survey deemed it the most irritating word, followed by "like" with 28% and the phrase "you know what I mean" at 15%.

"Perhaps these words are introduced through popular culture, for example movies......so they catch on," said Mary Azzoli, of Marist. "It has a lot to do with how accepted and how popular they become in every day speech.

Azzoli said words like "whatever" can be quite dismissive depending on how they are used.

"It's the way they're delivered and inherent in that delivery is a meaning.

The phrase "to tell you the truth" and "actually" were also unnerving to many people. But for younger Americans, aged 18 to 29, "like" was the word that annoyed them most.

Our parents

A touching story.........

A simple man tells how his booking an air ticket for his father, his first flight, brought emotions and made him realize that how much we all take for granted when it comes to our parents.

My parents left for our native place on Thursday and we went to the airport to see them off. In fact, my father had never travelled by air before, so I just took this opportunity to make him experience the same. In spite of being asked to book tickets by train, I got them tickets on lufthansa.

The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to see that I had booked them by air. The excitement was very apparent on his face, waiting for the time to travel. Just like a school boy, he was preparing himself on that day and we all went to the airport, right from using the trolley for his luggage, the baggage check-in and asking for window seat and waiting restlessly for the security check-in to happen.

He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was overcome with joy watching him experience all these things.

As they were about to go in for the security check-in,   he walked up to me with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it was not as if I had done something great but the fact that this meant a great deal to him.

When he said thanks, I told him there was no need to thank me.

But later thinking about the entire incident, I looked back at my life.

As a child how many dreams our parents have made come true. Without understanding the financial situation, we ask for football, dresses, toys, outings, etc. Irrespective of their affordability, they have satisfied to all our needs. Did we ever think about the sacrifices they had to make to accommodate many of our wishes?

Did we ever say thanks for all that they have done for us?

Same way, today when it comes to our children, we always think that we should put them in a good school. Regardless of the amount of donation, we will ensure that we will have to give the child the best, theme parks, toys, etc. But we tend to forget that our parents have sacrificed a lot for our sake to see us happy, so it is out responsibility to ensure that their dreams are realized and what they failed to see when they were young, it is our responsibility to ensure that they experience all those and their life is complete.

Many times, when my parents had asked me some questions, I have actually answered back without patience. When my daughter asks me something, I have been very polite in answering. Now I realize how would they have felt at those moments.

Let us realize that old age is a second childhood and just as we take care of our children, the same attention and same care needs to be given to our parents and elders.

Rather than my dad saying thank you to me, I would want to say sorry for making him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he has sacrificed for my sake and I will do my best to give the best possible attention to all their wishes. Just because they are old does not mean that they will have to give up everything and keep sacrificing for their grandchildren also. They have wishes, too.

Take care of our parents.

Share this to every child who loves their parents and want to love them more....

World's Tallest Couple

LOS ANGELES - Thier height made Wayne and Laurie Hallquist seem like an ideal match when they met seven years ago, and on Thursday they matched with something else - the title of the world's tallest living married couple.

Guinness World Records bestowed that towering distinction to the Hallquists in a ceremony under the marquee at its Hollywood museum. The couple arrived in a white limousine, with Wayne sporting a tuxedo and Laurie in a white wedding dress.

The Hallquists, who live in Stockton, California, measure a combined 13 feet, 4 inches, or 407.4 centimeters, to be exact. He stands 6 feet 10.4 inches, she 6 feet 5.95 inches, the Guinness organization said.

"It's a whole different perspective up here, and we can find each other quite easily in a crowd," Laurie told Reuters.

"We can see several people going bald that might not know it at the moment," joked Wayne, 57, who works as a telephone company wire splicer.

The Hallquists said that when they met at a church singles club in 2003, they could tell that others around them were sizing up a possible love affair because of their height.

"She walked in, everyone looked at her, then they looked at me," Wayne said.

But while Wayne said it was love at first sight for him, Laurie their first meeting came up short.

"He talked about the size of my hands and feet, which is kind of a no-no," said Laurie, 46. "And then the second time we had a chance to talk, I figured out he was really a good guy.

They have been married for seven years, but it took the Hallquists until this year to contact Guinness World Records.

The couple said they were discouraged at first from making a play for world's tallest couple, because they read online that a man and a woman each standing over 7 feet had married in the 19th century.

Only this year did they realize they could compete in another category : world's tallest living married couple.

Guinness previously listed a couple in England - Wilco and Keisha van Kleef-Bolton - as the world's tallest couplr at a combined height of 13 feet, 3 inches.

The Hallquists knew they could beat that - by an inch. So they contacted Guinness, and the organization had them measured by a doctor and a notary to make it official.

Laurie, a former college basketball player, who now works as a realtor, said she dated shorter men before Wayne, including one "kind of macho" guy who stood 5 foot-7. She described that pairing as "a little awkward" and said that she likes looking up to her husband - at least physically.

If revent history is any indication, the Hallquists may have a limited time to stand out. The van Kleef-Boltons were only named world's tallest couple last year, before the Hallquists stepped up to challenge them.

"There may be people who are taller than the Hallquists, but unless we go out and can measure them, the Hallquists have the record all to themselves," said Guinness World Records adiudicator Stuart Claxton.

Seven Hours: The Magic Number for Sleep

WASHINGTON (AFP) -- People who sleep more or fewer than seven hours a day, including naps, are increasing their risk for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the United States, a study published Sunday shows.  Sleeping fewer than five hours a day, including naps, more than doubles the risk of being diagnosed with angina, coronary heart disease, heart attack or stroke, the study conducted at West Virginia University's (WVU) faculty of medicine and published in the journal "Sleep" says.
And sleeping more than seven hours also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, it says.

Study participants who said they slept nine hours or longer a day were one-and-a-half times more likely than seven-hour sleepers to develop cardiovascular disease, the study found.
The most at-risk group was adults under 60 years of age who slept five hours or fewer a night. They increased their risk of developing cardiovascular disease more than threefold compared to people who sleep nine hours.

Women who skimped on sleep, getting five hours or fewer a day, including naps, were more than two-and-a-half times as likely to develop cardiovascular disease. Short sleep duration was associated with heart attack and stroke, the study says.

A seperate study, also published in "Sleep", showed than an occasional long lie-in can be beneficial for those who can't avoid getting too little sleep. In that study, David Dinges, who heads the sleep and chronobiology unit at the University of Pennsylvania school of medicine, found that 142 adults whose sleep was severely restricted for five days -- as it is for many people during the work week -- has slower reaction times and more trouble focusing.

But after a night of recovery sleep, the sleep - deprived study participants' alertness improved significantly, and the greatest improvements were seen in those who were allowed to spend 10 hours in bed after a week with just four hours' sleep a night.

"An additional hour or two of sleep in the morning after a period of chronic partial sleep loss has genuine benefits for continued recovery of behavioral alertness," Dinges said. In the study about sleep and cardiovascular disease, researchers led by Anoop Shankar associate professor at WVU's department of community medicine, analyzed data gathered in a national U.S. study in 2005 on more than 30,000 adults.

The results were adjusted for age, sex, race, whether the person smoked or drank, whether they were fat or slim, and whether they were active or a couch potato. And even when study participants with diabetes, high blood pressure or depression were excluded from the analysis, the strong association between too much or too little sleep and cardiovascular disease remained.

The authors of the WVU study were unable to determine the causal relationship between how long a person sleeps and cardiovascular disease. But they pointed out that sleep duration affects endocrine and metabolic functions, and sleep deprivation can lead to impaired glucose tolerance, reduced insulin sensitivity and elevated blood pressure, all of which the risk of hardening the arteries.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that most adults get about seven to eight hours of sleep each night.

Shankar suggested that doctors screen for changes in sleep duration when assessing patients' risk for cardiovascular disease, and that public health initiavates consider including a focus on improving sleep quality and quantity.

"Sleep" is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society.

Wrong e-mail address

Have a good laugh...........

A man checked into a hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife.

However, he accidentally typed a wrong e-mail address, and without realizing his error, he sent the e-mail.

Meanwhile.... somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned from her husband's funeral. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting condolence messages from relatives and friends.

After reading the first message, she fainted. The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife

Subject: I've Reached

Date: 24 Nov 2005

I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here, and we are allowed to send e-mails to loved ones.

I've just reached and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

Looking forward to seeing you TOMORROW!

The Tallest People

Did you ever wonder who were the TALLEST people in the world?

Let's find out...

ROBERT PERSHING WADLOW - Tallest Man in Medical History

Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 - July 15, 1940) was a man who, to this day, is the tallest in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. He is often known as the "Alton Giant" because of his Alton, Illinois hometown. Wadlow reached 8 feet 11.1 inches (2.72 metres) in height and weighed 490 pounds (220 kilograms) at his death. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death.

ZENG JINLIAN - Tallest Woman in Medical History

Zeng Jinlian (June 26, 1964 - February 13, 1982)
was the tallest female ever recorded in medical history. She is also the only female counted among the twelve individuals in the medical history who reached a verified eight feet or more. At the time of her death at the age of 17, in Hunan, China, she was 8ft 1.75 in (248.3 centimetres) tall. However, she could not stand up straight due to a severely deformed spine.

SULTAN KOSEN - Tallest Living Man

Sultan Kosen (born December 10, 1982 in Mardin, Turkey) is the man who currently holds the Guiness World Record for tallest living man. He is one of only twelve individuals in medical history to be confirmed at a height of eight feet or more. Kosen lives with his parents, three brothers and a sister, who are all of normal height. He was unable to complete his schooling because of his height and works part-time as a farmer. Kosen's height was recorded at 2.47 metres (8 ft 1.244 in) in his home country by Guiness World Records, at August 25, 2009, overtaking former world record holder Bao Xishun who stands 2.36 metres (7 ft 8.9 in) tall. He is also the the current Guiness World Record holder of 'largest hands' and 'largest feet', measuring 27.5 cm and 36.5 cm respectively.

YAO DEFEN - Tallest Living Woman

Yao Defen of China (born July 15, 1972) is claimed to be the tallest living woman. Guiness World Records said Sandy Allen of the U.S. was the tallest woman until Allen's death on August 13, 2008, but dispute Defen's clain. She weight 200 kilograms (440 pounds) and has size 26 (U.K.)/ 78 (E.U.) feet. She is 233.7 cm tall (7 ft 8 in). Her gigantism is due to a tumor in her pituitary gland.

However, others have claimed to be even taller. People of extreme height have always been exaggerating their true height. In history, many giants have claimed to be the tallest man alive, or even the tallest man ever.
This trend still continues today...
